We, the children of Earnest M. Skinner, are pleased to present this scholarly work written by our father and published in August 1958. The book was printed in a very limited number and made available only to family and close friends and as a reference source in the library at Brigham Young University.

Dad had no desire to publish for profit or take time from his busy schedule to promote this biography. He happily applied his time and talents to studying and teaching the gospel truths, both in and out of the classroom.

This book is one of a kind. We hope you will find the biography of Joseph Smith, Sr., useful. Prior to Dad’s passing, he finally consented to a second printing of the book. It has been done for his posterity and the Church in general.

This edition of Dad’s work remains the same as the first with the exception of spelling corrections and typing errors in the first printing. A footnote has been added to reflect the current Church policy regarding the office of Patriarch to the Church.

Joseph Smith, Sr., was the first Patriarch to the Church in this dispensation and one of the cornerstones in the restoration of the Church of Jesus Christ. It is with this in mind that we invite you to read and enjoy getting better acquainted with Father Smith. May this work bless your life and strengthen your testimony as it has ours.
